Brief -
Create a travel poster based on an excerpt from a story that mentioned a girl traveling through a mysterious land with an enchanted river, where she sees items from various fairytales like Cinderella’s shoe and Aladdin’s lamp. She also comes across an old lady warming herself near a fire which ended up being an image created by golden glowing leaves that were grouped together.
Solution -
The tools used were a laptop, tablet and Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to get the drawing done. The brainstorming process was done using Adobe Photoshop in order to put all the ideas in sketches together and that helped create the final poster that best represented the brief.
The final poster was done using Adobe Illustrator. The aim was to make the poster look like a wonderland from a fairytale with the main elements/characters from the excerpt of the story (the caterpillar, Aladdin’s lamp, Cinderella’s shoe, fire, forest and river). Since a whimsical look suited the story, a lineless style and limited color palette was chosen (purple, orange, red, blue, and green).
The objects were given shadow and highlights for dimension and the focal point has the most amount of saturated color to attract the viewer's attention (the objects in the foreground are darker in color but have reflected light from the glowing of the flame and illuminated river and they frame and guide the viewer's eyes to the focal point (which represents the imagery of the leaves grouping together to look like fire).
The title is colored with a faded gold and red color so it doesn't take the eyes off the focal point; the title is placed at the bottom of the posters in order to not distract the viewer from the other elements. The font chosen for the title is a script font that has clean edges and conveys a whimsical and magical feeling.
